Reflection for Candlemas – Years A B & C (The Presentation of Christ in the Temple)

Simeon is a strong man. It takes strength of mind and spirit to remain true to your God through times of suffering. Simeon suffers with his people. He longs to see God’s Chosen One coming to save the people of Israel, to set them free and bring them glory.

He carries in his heart God’s promise that his eyes will see the Lord’s salvation. Today his heart is beating faster, excitement and hope make his step lighter and eagerly he watches everyone passing him in the Temple.

Here he is! Here is the One! A tiny baby brought by a couple from a country village. Simeon holds out his arms to receive this precious child. With gentle tenderness the old man holds Jesus and at last he looks at Israel’s light of revelation and glory.

With wonder he praises God but even in this glorious moment his heart is pierced by the knowledge of the child’s future. He looks at Mary, moved with compassion. How will she bear the suffering to come?

Simeon is a strong man. It takes strength of mind and spirit to remain true to your vision when you glimpse where it may lead you.
